The Art of Self-Deception
Jordan OwensJanuary 15, 2024
Self-deception is the act of convincing yourself something is true when it is not. It happens constantly, in all areas of life.
Ever skipped the gym and had a perfectly reasonable excuse? Ever bought something you did not need and justified it? That is self-deception at work.
Three Ways to Catch Yourself
1. Pause and ask: what is actually motivating me right now? Am I avoiding something uncomfortable?
2. Choose long-term over short-term. Take ownership, forgive yourself quickly, and correct at the next opportunity.
3. Challenge your assumptions. Ask: what if I am wrong? What would that mean for me?
Simply knowing self-deception exists is a huge win. Awareness is the first step out of it.
